2Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

3And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.

4God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness.

5God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the first day.

6And God said, “Let there be a vault between the waters to separate water from water.”

7So God made the vault and separated the water under the vault from the water above it. And it was so.

8God called the vault “sky.” And there was evening, and there was morning—the second day.

9And God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.” And it was so.

10God called the dry ground “land,” and the gathered waters he called “seas.” And God saw that it was good.

11Then God said, “Let the land produce vegetation: seed-bearing plants and trees on the land that bear fruit with seed in it, according to their various kinds.” And it was so.

12The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.

13And there was evening, and there was morning—the third day.

14And God said, “Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years,

15and let them be lights in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth.” And it was so.

16God made two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to govern the night. He also made the stars.

17God set them in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth,

18to govern the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good.

19And there was evening, and there was morning—the fourth day.

20And God said, “Let the water teem with living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the vault of the sky.”

21So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living thing with which the water teems and that moves about in it, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

22God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth.”

23And there was evening, and there was morning—the fifth day.

24And God said, “Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: the livestock, the creatures that move along the ground, and the wild animals, each according to its kind.” And it was so.

25God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.

26Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

27So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

28God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”

29Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.

30And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food.” And it was so.

6:14So make yourself an ark of cypress wood; make rooms in it and coat it with pitch inside and out.

6:15This is how you are to build it: The ark is to be three hundred cubits long, fifty cubits wide and thirty cubits high.

6:16Make a roof for it, leaving below the roof an opening one cubit high all around. Put a door in the side of the ark and make lower, middle and upper decks.

6:17I am going to bring floodwaters on the earth to destroy all life under the heavens, every creature that has the breath of life in it. Everything on earth will perish.

6:18But I will establish my covenant with you, and you will enter the ark—you and your sons and your wife and your sons’ wives with you.

6:19You are to bring into the ark two of all living creatures, male and female, to keep them alive with you.

6:20Two of every kind of bird, of every kind of animal and of every kind of creature that moves along the ground will come to you to be kept alive.

6:21You are to take every kind of food that is to be eaten and store it away as food for you and for them.”

6:22Noah did everything just as God commanded him.

7:1The Lord then said to Noah, “Go into the ark, you and your whole family, because I have found you righteous in this generation.

7:2Take with you seven pairs of every kind of clean animal, a male and its mate, and one pair of every kind of unclean animal, a male and its mate,

7:3and also seven pairs of every kind of bird, male and female, to keep their various kinds alive throughout the earth.

7:4Seven days from now I will send rain on the earth for forty days and forty nights, and I will wipe from the face of the earth every living creature I have made.”

7:5And Noah did all that the Lord commanded him.

7:6Noah was six hundred years old when the floodwaters came on the earth.

7:7And Noah and his sons and his wife and his sons’ wives entered the ark to escape the waters of the flood.

7:8Pairs of clean and unclean animals, of birds and of all creatures that move along the ground,

7:9male and female, came to Noah and entered the ark, as God had commanded Noah.

7:10And after the seven days the floodwaters came on the earth.

7:11In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, on the seventeenth day of the second month—on that day all the springs of the great deep burst forth, and the floodgates of the heavens were opened.

7:12And rain fell on the earth forty days and forty nights.

7:13On that very day Noah and his sons, Shem, Ham and Japheth, together with his wife and the wives of his three sons, entered the ark.

7:14They had with them every wild animal according to its kind, all livestock according to their kinds, every creature that moves along the ground according to its kind and every bird according to its kind, everything with wings.

7:15Pairs of all creatures that have the breath of life in them came to Noah and entered the ark.

7:16The animals going in were male and female of every living thing, as God had commanded Noah. Then the Lord shut him in.

7:17For forty days the flood kept coming on the earth, and as the waters increased they lifted the ark high above the earth.

7:18The waters rose and increased greatly on the earth, and the ark floated on the surface of the water.

7:19They rose greatly on the earth, and all the high mountains under the entire heavens were covered.

7:20The waters rose and covered the mountains to a depth of more than fifteen cubits.

7:21Every living thing that moved on land perished—birds, livestock, wild animals, all the creatures that swarm over the earth, and all mankind.

7:22Everything on dry land that had the breath of life in its nostrils died.

7:23Every living thing on the face of the earth was wiped out; people and animals and the creatures that move along the ground and the birds were wiped from the earth. Only Noah was left, and those with him in the ark.

7:24The waters flooded the earth for a hundred and fifty days.
