Luke 17:5-6

5The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith!”

6He replied, “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it will obey you.

1)       According to verse 5 what did the apostles ask Jesus to do for them?

o   They asked Jesus to increase their faith.

 

2)       According to what Jesus said in verse 6 what could the apostles do if they had faith as small as a mustard seed?

o   They could tell a mulberry tree to be

§  Uprooted.

§  And planted in the sea.

o   And it would obey them.

 

3)       How could the apostles have their faith increased when Jesus did not respond to their request but simply pointed out what they could accomplish if they had the requisite faith?

o   They needed to summon up faith from within.

o   Other people could not increase their faith for them.

 

4)       How meaningful was it for the apostles to tell a mulberry tree to be uprooted and planted in the sea?

o   It was in itself meaningless.

 

5)       Why did Jesus personify the mulberry tree such that it would obey the apostles if they had faith as small as a mustard seed?

o   It was to

§  Dramatize what faith as small as a mustard seed could accomplish.

§  And incentivize the apostles to summon up however much faith they could from within.
